About lohagad fort

Lohagad fort is situated close to the lonavala hill station around 12 km and 60 km from Pune (northwest). Lohagad Fort divides the basins of Indrayani river and Pawna river, it is at an elevation of 3,489(1,033 m) feet above sea level. Fort is well maintained we can still see some ponds, walls, cannons, flags, on the edge of the fort, and places to drop stones to prevent people from climbing through ropes. The fort has four large gates: Hanuman Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja, Maha Darwaja and Narayan Darwaja still in good condition. The hill extends to the northwest called Vinchukada. Takes around 2hr to climb.

History of Lohagad Fort

The history of this fort is associated with the great Maratha Emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This fort a prominent part of Maharashtra’s history. The fort was under the Maratha empire for the majority of time, with a short period of 5 years under the Mughal empire. The main aim to build this fort was to keep eye on people like Pawan Maval, Nane Maval, Korbaarse Maval and Andhra Maval.

Ways to reach Lohagad from Pune

  1. Through the Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Take Exit from Sinhagad institute on the side of highway, take way to reach Lohagad.
  2. Through Bhaja Caves: Reach Malvali Village and then head off to Bhaja village which is 2 kms from Malvali. From there, follow the wider path next to stairs, It will take you to the base village Lohagadwadi.
  3. Through Old Mumbai-Pune Highway(Paud-Dudhiware Khind route): Kamshet--Pawnanagar--Pawna lake--Ambegaon--Dudhiware khind--Lohagad

Best time to visit Lohagad Fort

During winters, The best time to visit this fort is during winters, when the weather is pleasant and humidity is low. During monsoons, it becomes one of the hot tourist hotspots as it receives heavy rainfall, which in turn makes the view from the fort very spectacular.

What are the important tips?

  1. Try not to carry a heavy backpack.
  2. Keep water and food with you.
  3. Wear sport shoes or trekking shoes.
  4. It's best that you visit this fort in a large group so that you always have help around you.
  5. The trek takes more than two-hours to complete so I would advise you to not take young kids along with you.

The best time to visit is during winter that is between Nov-Feb and during monsoon ie from June to September.
