About Tung fort

Tung Fort is the one of the most beautiful fort in Maharashtra near Pune, this fort is the best trekker’s attraction. When you reach on the top you’ll get beautiful Pawna Lake and Mountain View. Tung has an elevation of 1075 m above sea level. Fort is now surrounded by Pawna Lake water on three sides. Tung fort is also named Kathingad ( कठीणगड ) fort. The word "Kathin" in Marathi means difficult. Reaching this fort requires a 400-metre climb. The fort is conical and shape is like Shivling( शिवलिंग ), it has steeps to climb with a very narrow route on the edges of the mountain throughout. A rocky staircase leads several feet down to a water reservoir. Fort has temple dedicated to Ganesha, Hanumana and main deity of fort called Tungai devi. Trek to tung fort is adventurous in rainy season as it becomes tough to climb as it becomes slippery.

History of Tung Fort

Tung font was captured by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This fort is small in size, and able to hold not more than 200-300 troops at a time. It’s shape and structure suggest that its main function was as a watchtower overlooking Maval region of the Pawana and Mulshi valleys guarding the road to Pune city.

Ways to reach Tung from Mumbai or Pune

  1. Tungwadi is the base village to Tung fort. Reach Lonavala then follow route: Bhushi Dam-INS Shivaji-Peth Shahapur-Tungwadi. All routes Tung fort trek start from Tangwadi village only.
  2. Via Lonavala: Lonavla—Bhushi Dam road—Kurwande—Ghusalkhamb Village—Tungwadi—Tung fort. The distance between Ghusalkhamb and Tungwadi is 8 km.
  3. Via Kamshet: Kamshet(NH4 Highway)—Pawnanagar—Tikona Peth—Jovan—Morve—Tungwadi village—Tung fort. It takes 45-60 minutes for this journey.
  4. Nearest Railway Station: Lonavala station is the convenient to reach Tung fort.
  5. Nearest Airport: Pune Airport

Best time to visit Tung Fort

During winters, The best time to visit this fort is during winters, when the weather is pleasant and humidity is low.

What are the important tips?

  1. Small children should avoid this fort as there is no railings to hold on and there has been many fatal accidents so climb very cautiously.
  2. Limited phone connectivity available for most cellular service.
  3. Try not to carry a heavy backpack.
  4. Keep water and food with you.
  5. Wear sport shoes or trekking shoes.
  6. It's best that you visit this fort in a large group so that you always have help around you.
